jpkirkphoto.com: About Me

I have been involved in photography on and off since I was about eight years old. While in college (I was about 32 at the time, late bloomer), struggling with Electrical Engineering classes, I was encouraged to take a photography class. While in this class, I was introduced to the wonders of large format photography. Fifteen years later my dream camera was in my hands. So I do still shoot film. With the size of the 4x5 transparency I can play... a lot! I have a digital work flow, if you can call it work. I get transparencies scanned. I leave the scans up to the pro's with the $75K scanners (Heidelberg Tango). A little expensive but worth every penny. The result is clean scans with minimal sharpening required. I just couldn't resist the Microtek Artixscan M1 though. This is a nice scanner with enough resolution to bring out great detail. Some post processing in Photoshop to create what I originally envisioned with the image and ...

I like big, beautiful, crisp prints! The bigger the better… well with some restrictions… for now anyway. But 50x60 is not out of the question today. The largest print I have made to date is a 24x30. When these prints are framed, hanging on the wall, you can almost dive into them. Great fun. My long term goal is to quit what I do now and be a full time photographer. I know, that’s what we all want to do.

I have recently dived into the digital photography world as well. I wanted to do some real macro work. So a DLSR with some extenstion tubes and away I go.
